Alexander McCobin is co-founder and president of Students For Liberty. Under his leadership, Students For Liberty has grown into the largest libertarian student organization in the world, which includes more than 800 leaders that support 1700+ student groups representing over 70,000 students. Previously, McCobin worked at the Cato Institute and ran another nonprofit organization that introduced high school debate programs to underserved youth in the greater Philadelphia area. He also serves on the Board of Advisors of The Atlas Society and is an honorary board member of the Our America Initiative. McCobin received a B.A. and M.A. in philosophy and economics at the University of Pennsylvania in 2008 and received his M.A. in philosophy at Georgetown University in 2014.

Why is it important that at this particular point in time, right-of-center youth become involved publicly, whether in politics, media, their communities, or in other capacities?

This is the most libertarian generation that has ever existed. Our generation is naturally inclined towards liberty and individual empowerment as we have grown up both socially tolerant and fiscally responsible. The world is not as free as it could or should be and it will take a great deal of work to change things, but young people today have a greater opportunity to change things than ever before. Our generation has the chance to create a freer future.

What must elected officials and others in positions of leadership do to make a right-of-center message resonate with the Millennial generation?

The Millennial generation is the libertarian generation. Leaders in this generation must educate our peers that there is a philosophy that encompasses their support for social tolerance, fiscal responsibility, and individual empowerment. Elected officials and others must either accept these principles or accept the loss of their leadership as Millennials gain greater influence in society.
