In the midst of the Left’s national campaign to restrict law-abiding Americans’ Second Amendment rights, Clemson University’s Young Americans for Freedom chapter Chair Nick James had a brilliant idea. James decided to have a gun giveaway at the club’s Second Amendment Banquet to stick it to gun control advocates.

It was, he says, his proudest moment so far (in what is sure to be a long career in the conservative movement). The move gained James national media attention from The Daily Caller and Yahoo! News, and he said it was an exhilarating but scary time.

“For a few days in the midst of that whole controversy, I honestly thought I was going to end up in jail,” he said.

But James walks free, and he continues to advocate for the principles the Founding Fathers outlined in the Bill of Rights.

Based on his daunting experience, James said if young conservatives fight for the things they’re passionate about, it makes it easier to stand tall in the face of opposition.

“Find an issue close to your heart and take a strong, well-informed stance on it,” he told Red Alert.

After college, James hopes to find a position that allows him to help protect citizens against government overreach.

In the meantime, James said he would like to see the GOP present a platform young people can relate to.

“We need someone dynamic and relatable — basically the opposite of John McCain in 2008,” James said. “Even Mitt Romney, though I think his business experience would have made him a great president, was widely seen as out of touch with the average American. We need a leader the average 20-something American can relate to.”
