Mike Assad holds the distinctive title of being one of New Jersey’s youngest elected officials. Assad, who has served on the Absecon, N.J., Board of Education for seven years, was elected at the young age of 18.

Assad was a candidate in the Republican primary for New Jersey’s 2nd Congressional District in 2012. Although he lost in the primary to incumbent Rep. Frank LoBiondo, Assad says he wasn’t deterred. His passion to bring about change and promote conservative principles has driven him to keep fighting to gain the Republican nomination for his New Jersey district, with the ultimate goal of holding a seat in Congress.

Congressional Republicans simply aren’t taking the concerns of young people seriously, Assad said, and he hopes to change that.

“Republicans in Congress have not really approached the issues of debt in a serious way,” he said. “Rather than just talk about these things, their actions need to speak louder than their words.”

Gandhi once said that people need to be the change they want to see in the world. Assad noted that one of America’s biggest problem is that there are too many watchers and not enough doers.

“It’s important to be informed and try to get people to open their eyes to what is going on,” he told Red Alert. “Too many sit back and watch, when what’s really important is for them to go out and make a difference. We should try to change things rather than just talk about them.”

His advice to other young conservatives is to do what he did: “Speak up and get involved!”

“Don’t let people who oppose what you are doing silence you,” he said. “Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and talk about these issues.”
