With a family full of elected officials, it’s no surprise Michael Neal has found his calling in Hoosier State politics.

Neal was recently elected chair of the Indiana Young Republicans and serves on the Legislative Committee at Indiana’s Right to Life chapter. During the last election cycle, Neal worked at the Indiana House Republican Campaign — the political arm of the Indiana House Republican Caucus.

In that role, Neal helped the state party win deep blue seats in Lake County despite heavy Democratic turnout for President Barack Obama.

“We’ve only ever had one Republican state representative from that area, at most. Between 2000 and 2012, we had zero,” Neal told Red Alert Politics. “It’s the first time we’ve had two.”

Taking on the majority party is daunting, yet Neal realizes it is necessary for young people like himself to dive into state and local politics in order to turn the country red.

“It’s our civic responsibility and our patriotic duty to act,” he said. “Every movement needs leaders and people who are willing to make changes — even those who may not be comfortable leading. They can be the ones running the campaigns for those who will.”

Neal said the best thing for young people looking to get their feet wet in politics to do is to just ‘show up’ at their local party and be “willing to do whatever there is to do.”

“From there, you’ll have opportunities to serve your community, and then maybe even your nation,” he added.

Speaking of serving the nation, Neal said he hopes to follow in his family’s footsteps and run for office at some point in the future. But for now, the rising star is content with helping the Republican Party reach its fullest potential in Indiana.
