Michael Cogar’s involvement in the Republican Party began accidentally.

Passing through the halls of Old Dominion University one evening, Cogar noticed a flyer advertising free pizza. And like most college students, he couldn’t refuse the offer.

Looking to satisfy his hunger, Cogar walked into his campus’ College Republicans meeting, which was a five-member chapter at the time. Within two years, Cogar would expand his university’s chapter to nearly 90 members and become Chairman of the College Republican Federation of Virginia.

“I turned an organization around that was seen by the party as failing and fundraised the most money that we’ve ever raised,” Cogar said of his time as CRFV Chairman.

Cogar’s ability to boldly lead others could be attributed to his time spent in the military. After he graduated from high school, Cogar served in the Army for five years as a Combat Engineer. When he retired from the Army in 2008, Cogar had completed two tours of combat in Iraq and earned the title of Sergeant.

In 2009, he enrolled at Old Dominion, where he is currently studying Mechanical Engineering. Upon graduation, Cogar intends to work at an engineering firm while staying active in politics. Ultimately, he hopes to see Virginia transition from a purple state to a permanent red state.

Despite his admirable past, 28-year-old Cogar remains remarkably humble. Consistent with Army principles, his one piece of advice for young conservatives is to respect their elders.

“Remember that you are a young conservative in the party and listen and take the advice of the people who came before,” he said. “You may think you’re a young hot shot, but there’s still a lot for you to learn.”
