After sitting on the sidelines for several years as an employee of Fox News’ parent company News Corp and observing the Republican Party, Matthew Swift had an idea. Perhaps young conservatives would have an easier time getting the party to take them seriously if they banded together and put pressure on lawmakers to act on the issues affecting their generation.

So Swift, his friend Scott Caputo and 49 other young conservatives launched Concord 51, an issue-based political action committee for young professionals, as a way to give their generation a seat at the table. The PAC limits its focus to fiscal responsibility, a strong national defense and energy advancement in order to unite young Republicans across the political spectrum.

To that end, it’s important for young people to “recognize the power of consensus, negotiation, coming to very broad and complex agreements,” Swift said.

“That doesn’t mean abandoning principles, but acknowledge current situation and designing policies for it,” he continued.

Swift has ambitious goals for his PAC, saying he envisions it becoming “the most representative in the country for center-right young professionals.”

Ultimately Swift hopes “to be able to utilize that focus and following toward driving a debate towards the most important issues of our time.”

If the GOP wants to win over younger voters, however, it will take more than events with members of Concord 51, Swift said. The GOP also needs to communicate the policies it stands for more sensibly.

“I believe the Republican Party holds the better policies, the better ideas. The party’s core holds a better approach to the pressing issues our country faces,” he said.

However, he pointed out the GOP is currently losing the debate because it does not communicate its policies very empathetically.
