At 16, most teenagers spend their free time learning how to drive and attending high school basketball games. When Madeleine McAulay was 16, she was busy transforming into the Teenage Political Maverick.

Last year, the Charlotte, N.C., teen decided to make a YouTube video addressing North Carolina’s gay marriage ruling. Her commentary was temporarily removed from the site after progressives trolled the video, propelling McAulay onto the national political stage and prompting a barrage of death threats.

After such a negative experience, it would have been understandable if McAulay caved under the criticism and retreated from the liberal hate; instead, she used her newfound limelight to promote conservative values.

“I know I’ve received so much hate, but you just have to push through that,” said McAulay, now 17. “The cause is so much greater than the hateful things people say on the Internet. No matter what kind of level you’re on, having a tough skin is key to any politics.”

McAulay has clearly donned a tough skin herself and continues to write at her blog “Faith Hope and Politics.”

“I would like for people to look at me and realize that you have to roll with the punches, and when you do that, you can have a really big impact,” she told Red Alert Politics.

Next up for McAulay is applying to and choosing a college. She said she plans to continue to stay on the national stage by keeping up with her blog and Twitter account, though she hasn’t completely ruled out a future in politics.

“Maybe one day I’ll hold an office,” McAulay speculated.  “I’m the kind of person who would like to have a career before becoming a career politician.”
