As Director of the Collegiate Network of Student Newspapers at the Intercollegiate Studies Institute, Lillian Civantos plays an instrumental role in fostering aspiring conservative journalists and providing them with opportunities to work at professional news outlets.

“[I]t’s time to take back the media,” Civantos told Red Alert Politics. “In the course of the next 10 years, I think that can happen.”

However, Civantos said being a conservative means more than just keeping up with the news every day. She said she hopes Millennials in the movement “educate themselves as much as possible to understand why they are a conservative.”

“Since most universities will not give you the grounding you need to truly understand the intellectual roots of conservatism, young conservatives should read widely on their own,” she said.

And Civantos suspects many will find their conservative values rooted in the Classics and the minds of history’s greatest thinkers. To that end, Civantos suggests young conservatives read The Closing of the American Mind by Allan Bloom.

Learning the roots of their beliefs will also help young conservatives communicate them more articulately and compassionately.

“There’s this perception of conservatives as the 1-percent elite who don’t care about the poor,” she said. “So young people can be open about their conservatism and show that narrative to be false.”

Civantos said that young conservatives shouldn’t be embarrassed by their political leanings.

“Contrary to the popular narrative, the truth is that many young people are conservatives, but they’re afraid to be labeled as such,” Civantos said. “Everyone is so fearful of being called ‘hateful’ and so eager to be ‘tolerant’ that they are afraid to ‘come out’ as a conservative.
