At just 28 years old, Dan Conston has had a hand in a bevy of successful campaigns, including working to elect heavy hitters like Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), Sen. Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) and Chief Deputy Whip Peter Roskam (R-Ill.) Conston now serves as the Communications Director for American Action Network.

“It’s an exhilarating experience,” he said of working on competitive campaigns. “It’s fun to work for someone you believe in. It’s a wild and whirlwind group of months.”

The communications guru’s foray into conservative politics began with an internship under President George W. Bush. The George Washington University grad then began crafting the perfect message for some of Congress’ most well-known Republicans.

“I realized that doing campaigns are essential,” he told Red Alert. “You have to do one or you’re not prepared for broader long-term communications.”

Conston said he believes a simple explanation of the Obama administration’s policies may encourage young people to get involved in the movement.

“There has been a war on young people for the last couple of years,”Conston said. “From the economy — which is a disaster — to a healthcare law that prices them out of the market, to student loans debacle to the broader question of how expensive college is.”

He said the Democratic Party’s solution to those problems was ‘more money.’

“There is always a better solution than just throwing money at a problem, and sometimes, there’s something to be said for Americans and their government taking personal responsibility and not just relying so heavily on other,” he added.

Similarly, Conston said the GOP needs to find a less “sterile” way to express to young people why conservative ideas will make their lives better.

“Sometimes we forget to do that,” he noted.
