Brandon Morse isn’t your average politically active young Republican. You won’t catch the 29-year-old blogger at CPAC (or anywhere else, really) in a suit and tie. He doesn’t dream of moving to D.C. someday to work in Congress or at some posh K Street firm. Morse is what you could call a nonconformist – a ‘Misfit.’

“People look at the conservative movement and see us as guys with nice jackets and button up shirts. It might be some of us, but not all of us,” he told Red Alert.

After writing for conservative blogs “here and there” for several years but not finding one he considered a good permanent home for his work, Morse launched his own site – Misfit Politics – in late 2011. At Misfit, Morse said, he hoped other alternative conservatives would find a place where they “could write how they wanted to and be relaxed about it.”

“I want to be a driving force in the cultural movement,” he said.

One of Morse’s chief complaints with the traditional conservative movement is that its stewards do a terrible job of making themselves “relatable.” Put simply, Morse said, conservatism is often “boring,” which is a shame considering the ideas conservatives favor are not.

“The Constitution is the most punk rock piece of paper out there. It allows us to do what we want and be what we want,” he said of conservatism’s defining document.

That’s why Morse and his fellow Misfits have adopted the tactics of the Left and are seeking to educate young Americans about their rights and freedoms through a combination of pop culture and comedy.

“Media is not the bad guy,” Morse pointed out. “We spend so much time trying to fight it when we should be trying to retake it.”
