After joining forces with America’s largest pro-liberty organization for college students, Young Americans for Liberty, just after its inception five years ago, Bonnie Kristian has quickly become one of the leaders in the liberty movement.

Kristian discovered libertarianism early on in college, which led her to sign on to Ron Paul’s first presidential campaign as an intern in 2007. After Paul lost his bid for the Republican nomination and Students for Ron Paul evolved into YAL, Kristian joined the organization during her final semester in college as a blogger. She swiftly became blog manager, and upon graduation was hired by the Leadership Institute to launch CampusReform.org. There, she worked as the Online Communications Manager until she moved over to YAL full-time as the Communications Director the following summer.

“The majority of the staff at YAL came up through the ranks of starting at the local level and worked their way up. I think that for a lot of people that’s a great way to get started,” she told Red Alert Politics, noting that a significant part of securing a job in politics is who you know.

“A lot of people are willing to give you a hand up if you’re willing to stay in touch and pay your dues,” she added.

A key member of the fastest growing political group on college campuses, Kristian also has sound advice for the GOP on what it could be doing better to attract Millennials. Pointing to the popularity of hip Rand Paul-type candidates, Kristian suggested the GOP invest in better graphic design.

“Conservatism often tends to have a very old look. The whole presentation screams old,” she said.
