When Betsy Woodruff was just a senior at Hillsdale College, she interned with National Review and got a “little press pass,” an opportunity she was grateful to have as a college student. Then, following her graduation from the school in 2012, the young journalist was awarded the publication’s William F. Buckley fellowship, and Woodruff made the jump from intern to full-time reporter.

Woodruff has covered a host of topics, from culture to campaigns to Capitol Hill. And her stories have landed her on Fox Business and MSNBC.

Even though Woodruff is a staunch conservative, she said young conservatives should be wary of developing ‘tunnel vision’ by remaining in the conservative echo chamber.

“You’re not going to get anything done or influence anyone if you’re small minded,” Woodruff told Red Alert. “So I encourage people to get out there and pick a few liberal writers that you like and familiarize yourself with their work frequently.”

She said this was a good thought project for young conservatives so they remember why they support the cause.

“It’s important for young activists to bear in mind that their ideologies might shift, and it’s healthy to re-examine your assumptions from time to time and really think critically on why you believe what you believe,” Woodruff said.

Furthermore, Woodruff said it’s important for young people to treat others who have worked in the movement longer than them respectfully and heed their counsel wisely.

“Do not think that you know everything because there are tons of situations with young kids who write stuff and make arguments and think they have it all figured out when they don’t,” she said.
