Alex Skatell didn’t need to wait for the Republican National Committee’s 2012 autopsy to recognize why the GOP fell flat in the presidential election. Long before the report was released, Skatell and several others working in the Republican Party decided to start a new digital organization, Media Group of America Holdings, to begin leveling the playing field.

“After this past cycle, a few of us that worked inside the party realized certain elements of our tech, talent and online messaging challenges would be better solved from an outside perspective than inside the party,” he told Red Alert Politics. “So we went directly to donors and formed an organization that was solely focused on investing time, energy and capital into finding solutions to these challenges.”

Although he was involved in South Carolina politics growing up, Skatell didn’t originally see his passion for technology leading to full-time work in the political arena.

But after the 2008 election cycle, Skatell went to work at the Republican Governors Association as Director of New Media and Technology, where he was given the opportunity to bolster his talents. In 2011, he moved to the National Republican Senatorial Committee where he oversaw the party committee’s entire digital operation.

At MGA, Skatell is working to help Republicans win back the Senate and White House.  He says he’s optimistic about the GOP’s ability to improve in the next several years.

“I think that the party now is poised to actually do a lot of the self evaluation and fix a lot of the challenges within the party,” he said.

One of those challenges is finding ways to empower young people to reach large audiences with a conservative message that resonates.

“It’s going to require conservatives with a megaphone being ready to give young spokesmen the attention and resources they need,” he added.
