For Amanda Henneberg, growing up in the DC metro area made it inevitable that she would someday become involved in politics.

“Growing up right outside of D.C., politics was everywhere,” she says.

But it was in college at the University of Virginia that she realized that she wanted politics to be her career.

Henneberg is a testament to what young people can achieve in politics if they are willing to work hard. The 29-year-old has worked on several campaigns, from Congressional to Senate races and now on Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney’s campaign as the deputy press secretary.

Before joining the Romney campaign during the primary, Henneberg served as the communications director for U.S. Rep. Robert Hurt (R-VA), television communications advisor to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and as a Regional Press Secretary at the Republican National Convention, among other positions.

Henneberg, who serves as a spokesperson for Romney’s presidential campaign, said she thinks it’s important for young people to get involved in the political process.

“My advice for youth in the conservative movement is to get involved in campaigns at any level as much as you can,” she said. “Because they are unique experiences where you can learn the most valuable lessons firsthand about the political process.”
