The Chicago Teachers’ Union Strike: Lacking an Attitude of Gratitude

If you’d like to have something to talk about in Chicago, you can most certainly capitalize on the Chicago Teacher Union (CTU) strike because everyone in the Windy City knows the buzz. CTU president, Karen Lewis, fights with Chicago’s Mayor Rahm Emanuel. Today the papers claim Rahm is ready to sue. While the teachers’ are on strike, children are out of school.

But while everyone in Chicago, and frankly, the entire United States is witnessing the teachers’ whining, are the teachers themselves aware of the ungrateful attitude on display for their students and fellow countrymen in an economy where 23 million are unemployed?

Stossel show the big draw at ISFLC 2012

The big draw to the 2012 International Students for Liberty conference was John Stossel. Stossel has been a guest for the past two years at the conference, which is certainly an impressive feat for the young organization. Saturday evening, Stossel taped an episode of his television show in front of the 1000+ ISFLC attendees.

When Stossel emerged on the stage, the crowd shouted, “Stossel-stache!,” referring to Stossel’s notorious mustache. Nearly everyone in the room was a self-proclaimed libertarian, sporting Ron Paul 2012 stickers and pins and shouting for “Ron Paul” on several occasions. When Stossel asked the crowd if they were “Young Republicans,” he received a deafening “NO!” He received a similar response from the audience when asked if they were “Young Democrats.”

Your Degree is Absolutely Worthless

Young Americans for Liberty Executive Director, Jeff Frazee uttered those words at the International Students for Liberty Conference session, “How to Get a Job”. The room was packed with bright-eyed libertarian students eager to get ahead in the job market. A worthless degree is exactly what my generation wants to hear…right?

I dutifully listened to the disappointing statement that the piece of paper costing more than six figures I spent four years obtaining is entirely without merit. Following the “absolutely worthless” remark, Frazee said taking an internship after graduation is essential.
