Just when you thought he was done making bad decisions, Justin Bieber officially announced his support for the controversial Black Lives Matter movement. On Friday, the pop singer posted the Black Lives Matter logo on Instagram with the following caption:
“I am a white Canadian and I will never know what it feels like to be an African American but what I do know is I am willing to stand up and use my voice to shine light on racism, because it’s a real thing and it’s more prevalent now than I have ever seen in my lifetime.. we are all Gods [sic] children and we are ALL EQUAL.”
While many applauded the Biebs for “checking his privilege,” critics were quick to point out his hypocrisy. When he was a teen, he was caught on camera making racist jokes and using the n-word.
One commenter, @ebony.sheree, wrote: “[Y]ou didn’t mind making racist jokes, now you wanna stand up for black people, make ya mind up dude.”
Based on his connections, it’s no surprise that the “Despacito” singer has embraced this movement. Usher has been Bieber’s long-time mentor and he is close to several others in the hip hop industry, which has given the movement a multimillion-dollar platform. The Biebs was undoubtedly feeling some peer pressure for not being political enough.
While the movement has worked hard to become “mainstream,” its tactics are characterized as radical and divisive, and the movement has been plagued with brutality towards the police. According to a recent Harvard-Harris poll, 57 percent of registered voters say that they have an unfavorable opinion of Black Lives Matters protests and protesters.
Ebony reports that Bieber is currently not affiliated with any other social movements, suggesting that this could be the beginning of a long-term affair with the movement and not just another celebrity cause for the singer. On the other hand, he could just be telling us “One Time.”
Either way, JB has been led astray again.
