Imagining gun rights under President Hillary Clinton

As Hillary Clinton starts her book tour to discuss “What Happened,” many are taking a moment to reflect on how different the country may be if she had won the 2016 Presidential election. Some projections are simply speculation, but we can be sure that her actions towards curbing gun rights would have been drastic.

Let’s walk through her history of opposing gun rights and find where that takes us.

Hillary Clinton has a serious problem with you owning a firearm. Throughout her political career, she has made it abundantly clear that she wants to see law-abiding Americans stripped of their Second Amendment right, which our Founding Fathers were so passionate about preserving. She began her assault on the Second Amendment beginning in the 1990s and early 2000s. In 1993, Mrs. Clinton testified in front of a Senate Committee in which she expressed her favorability for a 25 percent tax on handguns and $2,500 licensing fees for gun dealers.

Then in 1994, she backed her husband’s infamous federal “assault weapons” ban, which arbitrarily banned certain firearms based on their make or model, along with a slew of other provisions that were a gross infringement to the Second Amendment. The Federal Assault Weapons Ban expired in 2004.

In the past several years, Hillary has continued her vicious assault on the Second Amendment by calling for stricter gun control including a renewed federal assault weapons ban.

In 2015, Hillary condemned the United States Supreme Court (SCOTUS), stating that that the Court got it “wrong on the Second Amendment.” In this same conversation, Hillary gloated about her husband’s “victory over the National Rifle Association” with the passage of the federal assault weapons ban.

When Hillary was interviewed on the sole topic of the Second Amendment, she even refused to give a clear answer. In a 2016 interview with George Stephanopoulos, Hillary was given numerous chances to finally put an end to the idea that she is anti-gun. Did she though? No, she continued to deflect by giving open ended answered that led to more confusion. At one point Stephanopoulos asked “Do you believe that their (SCOTUS) conclusion that an individual’s right to bear arms is constitutional?” Hillary responded with “If it is a constitutional right…”

Hillary’s greatest assault on the Second Amendment was her intent to bypass Congress to enact federal gun control, if she had won the election. Beginning October 7, 2016, WikiLeaks began releasing emails that were hacked from John Podesta, Hillary’s campaign manager. The most disturbing of these, written on October 5, 2015, showed Podesta and Hillary agreeing that executive action on gun control had to be taken.

These past statements and actions from Hillary Clinton make it is safe to say that if she had won the Presidency, gun rights would be worse off today. There would at least one anti-Second Amendment Justice on SCOTUS, a renewed federal assault weapons ban, and a slew of new restrictions on gun ownership for law-abiding citizens, thus leaving them defenseless against criminals and a tyrannical government.
