On Thursday night, Daily Show host Trevor Noah called out the radical leftist group Antifa on their violent tactics and even went as far as to compare them to the Islamic State, a terrorist group that’s known for killing innocent people and enslaving women and children.
Noah, in his segment, slammed the violent factions of Antifa, calling them “Vegan ISIS,” for using violence and rioting to make a political point. He used the example of one woman from Disrupt J20, who said that breaking windows is a “symbolic act.”
“Seriously though, breaking a window was a ‘symbolic act’? You might think it’s some deep statement, but most people see that and think, ‘Great, now I’ve got to walk a whole block up to the next Starbucks,'” Noah said. “Like, who is that supposed to convince? What are you trying to do? It definitely doesn’t convince the Starbucks guy, the person who’s gonna be in the store cleaning up the glass, like, ‘Yeah, they made a good point about fascism. I understand what they mean. I understand it.'”
He continued. “You’ve got these Antifa members who believe that smashing sh-t is all they should do. Others want to expose neo-Nazis, and part of Antifa has only been about video games. But the part that’s been causing the most headaches is the one that’s hitting people in the head.”
Antifa, in recent months, has attempted to silence and intimidate Trump supporters, free speech advocates, and journalists through violence and rioting. This past weekend in Berkeley, California, thousands of Antifa members showed up to Martin Luther King Jr. Civic Center Park to shut down a tiny pro-Trump rally. They assaulted Trump supporters and journalists with bats, shields, and their fists.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, who called groups like Patriot Prayer “white supremacist,” issued a statement condemning Antifa by name. In it, she said, “Our democracy has no room for inciting violence or endangering the public, no matter the ideology of those who commit such acts. The violent actions of people calling themselves Antifa in Berkeley this weekend deserve unequivocal condemnation, and the perpetrators should be arrested and prosecuted.”
While the actions committed by white supremacists, particularly in Charlottesville, Virginia, were absolutely abhorrent, we’re starting to see a shift from the left where it’s now okay (or politically convenient) to condemn extremist groups like Antifa.
