Just as President Trump predicted, liberals have moved the goal posts on trying to erase public statues that could offend them. Successfully lobbying state and local governments to abolish statues of Confederate soldiers and generals as well as former Supreme Court Chief Justice Taney, progressives are now targeting Christopher Columbus.
In the wake of the Charlottesville protest, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio set up a commission to look at any symbols in the city that could suggest hate, division, racism, anti-Semitism, or have any message that might be against the “New York values.” This is the same city that funded an art exhibit in the late 90s of the Virgin Mary surrounded by pornography and covered in elephant feces.
Well, New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito has asked de Blasio’s commission to bring down the famous Christopher Columbus statue in Columbus Circle. The statue has been up since 1892 in the neighborhood of Central Park West, reported Fox 5 NY.
Another statue progressives are taking aim at is a memorial of Doctor J. Marion Sims in East Harlem, across the street from the New York Academy of Medicine.
Sims is famous for advancing science and medicine in the field of gynecology. He even created a procedure to repair women’s vesicovaginal fistula after complicated child births. However, during the time that he practiced medicine, he experimented on slaves, something fairly common in his time.
Viverito is a controversial liberal even by New York standards. She supported convicted terror boss Oscar López Rivera’s invitation to march in the 2017 Puerto Rican Day Parade, even as corporations and other Democrats took a pass.
Still, she is a powerful force in the city and will not be the last Democrat to move the goal post from Confederate monuments to statues of other stalwarts of history.
