“Shoot him outright”: Professor fired for calling for Trump’s death

Kevin Allred, a gender, sexuality, and women’s studies scholar and instructor at Montclair State University, has been fired on Monday after sending out tweets in which he called for someone to shoot President Trump.

In a now-deleted tweet, Allred wrote on Friday, “Trump is a fucking joke. This is all a sham. I wish someone would just shoot him outright.”

Over the weekend, Allred faced some intense blowback from Trump supporters. He then bragged about how many Trump supporters he could block on Twitter.

Allred apologized on Monday night saying it wasn’t meant to be taken literally.

But it was too late, by late Monday night, Allred announced that he had been fired from Montclair State University before he even had a chance to teach a class.

He then went on to write, “i’m an amazing teacher–my evaluations & testimonials prove it. if speaking out against Trump’s ‘great America’ keeps me from classrooms…”

This is one of the first few cases in which people who hold a lot of animosity for President Trump are facing consequences for calling for violence against him. In May, Kathy Griffin was fired from her New Years hosting gig on CNN for holding an effigy of Donald Trump’s head in an ISIS-inspired photo shoot.

Up until this past month, however, colleges and universities were hesitant to discipline their faculty and staff who are anti-Trump. Instead, they’d punish conservative and libertarian students for any confrontation over speech. The firing of Allred is a sign that professors need to watch what they say about the sitting U.S. President, no matter how much they hate him.
