Part of Donald Trump’s success was his dynamic ability at branding both his own ideas and his political opponents. His most popular phrases are “Crooked Hillary,” “Build the Wall,” and “Drain the Swamp.”
Delivering on his promises has become a Herculean effort with both establishment Republicans and the Democratic Party totally opposed to his brand of populism. The deep state is leaking classified information to the press, and a hungry media is looking to produce a series of clickbait articles predicting the impending doom on the administration.
Despite being entrenched in scandal and chaos for the last few months, Trump has gained an unlikely ally on one of his key issues.
Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-Ore.) has introduced a bill this year to turn Trump’s pledge to “Drain the Swamp” into a law.
The bill would institute Trump’s five-year ban on political appointees from becoming lobbyists for special interest groups. It’s currently a non-binding commitment which not every member of the Presidential transition team signed. As a result, at least nine of them are already working as K Street lobbyists.
DeFazio’s bill also puts a lifetime ban on executive branch members from serving as foreign agents.
So far only three Democrats have signed onto the bill, giving it little chance of being brought to a vote unless some Republicans come to its rescue.
