The Democratic Party is a broken-down car. No one is driving, the motherboard doesn’t have a clear destination, and the passengers inside are screaming at one another about who’s really in charge. Still, they are able to run over the feckless Republicans in Congress with this recent spending bill.
On Friday, Congress voted 382-30 for a continuing spending bill to prevent 17 percent of the government from shutting down and the entire press corps from lighting their hair on fire by believing Trump was bringing the end of days. A final vote on the deal is expected today or tomorrow.
According to details documented in The Washington Examiner, the $1.05 trillion spending bill is a big government nightmare. $12.5 billion is going into new military spending, $1.5 billion for border security, and $30 billion in new domestic spending. $600 million will go to battle the opioid crisis, $100 million for infrastructure, and nearly $300 million to bailout Puerto Rico. The bill also funds a healthcare program for retired coal miners and continues funding for Planned Parenthood.
Ironically, despite the fact that Congressional Republicans insisted Trump wasn’t a conservative during the campaign, they rejected his calls to cut domestic spending and didn’t include a penny for the border wall.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) is celebrating the compromise as a great victory.
Making matters even worse is a provision by Speaker Paul Ryan to expand the amount of H2B visas by at least 20,000 annually. The H2B visa is for non-farm, seasonal blue collar jobs, and this expansion puts the same kind of people who voted for Trump across the Rust Belt in direct competition with foreign labor.
All of the promises Trump made to protect blue collar workers will be broken with this bill. Speaker Ryan is leading the charge to attack Americans for the sake of corporate interests who might back him in the next looming election.
The budget bill was not just bad. It was a steaming pile of horse sh*t. Any House Republicans who vote for it should be ashamed of themselves, and absolutely every one of them should be facing a primary challenge in 2018.
None of their promises have been kept. They thwarted almost all of Trump’s agenda. And for what? To protect 17 percent of the government from being shut down, and the fear that the press might attack them when the next election rolls around.
Go team R, you’ve gained the whole world, every branch of government, and forfeited your integrity, the people’s trust, and the American workers who you promised to protect.
