A pro-life millennial’s defense of Tomi Lahren

It’s no secret that the mainstream media is biased in favor the Left. A conservative going on to a liberal show can be like Daniel going into the lions’ den. It is tough for most to hold their ground, particularly when it’s them against the rest of the room. The latest victim of this is TheBlaze’s Tomi Lahren, a 24-year-old millennial.

During her appearance on The View, Lahren crumbled on abortion. She claimed that it would be hypocritical to be both pro-limited government and to be pro-life. While many conservatives have lambasted her, I believe, as a pro-life conservative millennial, that Lahren deserves the benefit of the doubt.

It is very easy to fall into the logical fallacy that if one is for freedom and against the government having the right to tell anyone what to do in their private lives, then this should include the freedom of a woman regarding her own body. Lahren’s starting point is freedom and liberty. Her stance is actually more libertarian than liberal.

Additionally, Lahren wasn’t advocating for abortion or shilling for Planned Parenthood. In fact, in one of her Final Thoughts segments, she went after liberal actress Lena Dunham for stating that she wished she had an abortion.

Lahren has done great things for the conservative movement. We need more young voices in our cause. And as a millennial, I can relate to these types of logical fallacies, as I am just a bit older than she is and have held different views over time. I grew and am growing in my views as I learned more about conservatism. Everyone has a right to change their opinions as they think more deeply about them.

Hence, I strongly disagree with Lahren on this issue. We all know that we have the right to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” from the Declaration of Independence, the founding document of our country. In fact, the 5th and 14th amendments of the Constitution specify the importance of life. Life, itself, is the issue in this debate — as it is the bedrock of our worldview. The argument that abortion is about a woman’s body is an obvious fig leaf covering the little value liberals hold for the life and rights of an unborn baby. Ending a human life is murder and undermines society in a way nothing else can.

However, the philosophy of conservativism also believes that everyone has the ability and right to think freely. Our movement shouldn’t act like the Left, where they must agree on everything or become outcasts.

I hope Lahren learns the consequences of her mistaken beliefs on abortion, but throwing her out of the conservative movement is the worst way to help that happen.
