Did you know that mainstream liberals think Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are a “Jim Crow education system”?
That’s right, HBCUs are now an enemy of the Left. Why? Because President Donald Trump and Education Secretary Betsy Devos are about to help them out significantly with an Executive Order, and Democrats need a way to tear down their success.
The truth is that President Barack Obama ignored HBCUs. Democrats aren’t happy that HBCU advocates like Jarrett Carter Jr. are saying, “with one executive order unique to HBCU federal support, Trump could become one of the greatest advocates black colleges have ever seen.”
The Left is afraid to see their grasp on the black vote slip away.
Slate writer Ben Mathis-Lilley wrote this morning in his story titled, “Insane Betsy DeVos Press Release Celebrates Jim Crow Education System as Pioneer of ‘School Choice,'” that Devos’ press release “celebrates legal segregation.”
[T]his official 2017 federal government press release celebrates legal segregation (!!!) on the grounds that the Jim Crow education system gave black students “more options,” as if there was a robust competition between HBCUs and white universities for their patronage.
Celebrates legal segregation? That’s a pretty harsh claim. What statement is he pointing to?
Devos’ statement said:
A key priority for this administration is to help develop opportunities for communities that are often the most underserved. Rather than focus solely on funding, we must be willing to make the tangible, structural reforms that will allow students to reach their full potential.
Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have done this since their founding. They started from the fact that there were too many students in America who did not have equal access to education. They saw that the system wasn’t working, that there was an absence of opportunity, so they took it upon themselves to provide the solution.
HBCUs are real pioneers when it comes to school choice. They are living proof that when more options are provided to students, they are afforded greater access and greater quality. Their success has shown that more options help students flourish.
Of course, the Slate writer seems to lack basic literary comprehension.
Did Devos praise the system that forced HBCUs to be created? No. She praised the entrepreneurial efforts of these colleges to thwart the racist system from holding down black students. They provided choices to black students and gave them opportunity they otherwise wouldn’t have had.
She praised the people and the colleges, not the racist system that motivated HBCUs to be created.
Does the Slate writer think black students would have been better off without HBCUs? That’s what he implies.
Here’s the irony: HBCUs arose out of a racist system to offer black students more choices. Some would argue that our current system is racist as well because of economic segregation with school districts. School choice offers black students a way out of this modern segregation.
HBCUs and school choice are tools to thwart racist systems. That’s what Devos said.
By blasting Devos’ praise of HBCUs, liberals are actually defending the racist status quo — both Jim Crow laws and our current system. Democrats were the source of Jim Crow laws and are now the enemy of school choice.
