Schools need to stop indoctrinating and start educating

In an ideal world, the goal of schooling would be to teach students how to learn and how to think. The importance of a formal education has, rightfully, been embedded into society — students studying hard and preparing for the SAT’s in order to be accepted to college, college students chasing the much-coveted 4.0 GPA, and parents supervising their children studying and doing their homework.

The end goal of these years of toil is for the student to be an educated contributor to society. By using his or her own knowledge, skills, and abilities to think critically, they can be the best in their profession. Unfortunately, many teachers and their unions have a different goal in mind — to indoctrinate their students to become political leftists.

The attempted indoctrination by teachers is not a new phenomenon by any means. However, it has gotten out of hand as a result of the presidential election of Donald Trump. According to the New York Post, Adria Zawatsky, a New York City educator, gave a homework assignment where the objective was to bash Trump and praise former President Barack Obama. It was discovered when an 11-year-old girl from Zawatsky’s class asked her father, Vincent Ungro, to help her with her vocabulary homework. Ungro saw this:

“President Trump speaks in a very superior and _________ manner insulting many people. He needs to be more __________ so that the American people respect and admire him,” reads one of the politically-charged statements.

“Barack Obama set a _________ when he became the first African-American president,” another read.

The words to fill in were “haughty,” “humble” and “precedent,” respectively.

Ungro would not allow his daughter to complete the homework, and wrote in its place, “Please keep your political views to yourself and do not try to influence my children on them. Thank you.”

Zawatsky proceeded to take off 15 points from the homework for being incomplete, which Ungro described as “vindictive.” Ungro told the Post that the teacher should leave her political views at home and not force his child to write disparaging words about the president. Zawatsky emailed Ungro the next week — not an apology, but a defense of her free speech rights.

The reason for this is that the left does not care about educating children objectively. Their goal is to indoctrinate, and even when they are caught red-handed, they will deny it and defend themselves to the end. As a result of leftist teachers’ endeavors over many years, we have college students needing safe spaces and rioting when a conservative speaks on campus.

This is possibly the biggest reason education needs to be reformed. School choice is the first change that needs to come. Teachers would be much more careful in their words and actions because they can easily lose their students and their jobs if they aren’t. President Trump supports school choice. And that’s why the teachers and their unions have every reason to be frightened and will oppose him however they can.
