Times are getting even tougher for conservatives on college campuses. Last week, the student senate at Santa Clara University rejected a petition by the conservative group, Turning Point USA (TPUSA), to form a chapter on campus.
Turning Point USA is a conservative student activist group started by Charlie Kirk. The organization has over one thousand chapters on campuses nationwide and preaches a message of “fiscal responsibility, free markets, and limited government.” For triggered liberals at Santa Clara, however, a different message was being conveyed.
Students, who opposed the formation of a TPUSA chapter, said they felt “unsafe” and in “danger” associating the organization with the alt-right and white supremacists.
During the student senate meeting, a group of about 50 or so students spoke on how vehemently opposed they are to the formation of TPU, as reported by the Daily Caller.
Caleb Alleva, one of the Turning Point petitioners, said that not only were they repeating themselves, but they also couldn’t cite any facts to back up their points.
“A lot of them are lying about being afraid or they are genuinely in fear because of this false sense of danger promulgated by the media that anyone who is vaguely conservative is a Nazi or a white supremacist,” Alleva said told the Daily Caller.
It wasn’t just a handful of students who were opposed to Turning Point USA, apparently a full-time employee went out of their way to smear the group.
David Warne, a Santa Clara student senator, told the Daily Caller that a university employee sent a PowerPoint presentation via email to the entire student senate.
“The order of the presentation goes like this: White Nationalists—>Alt-Right—>Identity Evropa—>Richard Spencer—>Milo Yiannopoulos—>Turning Point USA,” Warne summarized.
Identity Evropa, a white supremacist group, recently targeted Santa Clara with posters on campus that promoted white identity and ethnocentrism.
They must have not seen the massive “Young Latino Leadership Summit” featured at the TPUSA homepage.
It’s sad to see that conservatives are being held to a different standard by liberals and asked to condemn groups they have no affiliation with. It’s especially ironic because liberals are quick to defend every racial, ethnic, and religious minority because of the actions of a small few.
Where’s the empathy?
