Under the Affordable Care Act, adult children can stay on their parents’ plan until age 26. So, why should millennials support President Donald Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Health and Human Services, who wants to repeal and replace Obamacare?
Millennials should rally behind HHS nominee Georgia Congressman Tom Price because of his introduced bill, “The Empowering Patients First Act.” It would enable more choices in a free market, require no mandates or penalties, and still have the most favorite components of Obamacare — such as staying on a parent’s plan until age 26 and not being turned away for pre-existing conditions.
Price is also an orthopedic surgeon and spent decades in the practice caring for patients.
“I know Doctor Price. He’s a smart guy, he’s a thoughtful guy, and he’s also a determined guy,” former Bush Deputy HHS secretary Tevi Troy said last month. “He keeps introducing plans to repeal and replace the affordable care act and has done so consistently ever since the ACA has been in effect.”
“I also think it’s smarter to bring a legislator. A legislator knows how to work the legislative process,” he added.
Price’s alternative — in addition to the previous aspects that are currently under Obamacare — includes, but is not limited to, permitting tax credits to be used to purchase private insurance and directing states to use federal money to create high-risk pools. These are government-run health plans for patients with existing medical conditions who can’t afford health insurance within the private sector. Speaker Paul Ryan has briefly offered an alternative under his “Better Way” plan. It is expected his proposal for healthcare reform will consolidate with Price’s.
Under Obamacare, premiums have only skyrocketed. In Arizona, for example, premiums are expected to increase this year to 116 percent. Millennials have been affected the worst of all age groups. Additionally, because of Obamacare’s mandate on businesses to provide health insurance if they have at least 50 employees, employers have cut back on work hours for their employees.
“Many of our peers don’t like conservatives very much, but they don’t realize that the Ryan alternative to Obamacare will lower insurance costs—especially for millennials,” The Heritage Foundation’s Timothy Doescher wrote. “This plan was created with an understanding that young people shouldn’t bear the entire burden and recognizes that our future should be full of excitement and opportunity, not high taxes, suffocating bureaucracy, and crippling premiums.”
Ryan and Price’s plan combined into a successful Obamacare replacement has the best chance of happening if Price is confirmed. Millennials need to know that Price is right and his appointment to HHS would be anything but costly for our generation.
