While Democrats throughout the country bid farewell and extend their gratitude to President Obama, there is one prominent liberal who is holding out: Dr. Cornel West.

In a scathing op-ed published on The Guardian, West doesn’t believe that Obama directly produced President-elect Donald Trump, but he played a significant role in helping him get elected. But, most of all, West concludes that Obama’s cheerleaders, the ones who believe he could do no wrong, share a bulk of the responsibility of our “post-truth” world.

“The age of Barack Obama may have been our last chance to break from our neoliberal soulcraft,” West writes. “We are rooted in market-driven brands that shun integrity and profit-driven policies that trump public goods. Our ‘post-integrity’ and ‘post-truth’ world is suffocated by entertaining brands and money-making activities that have little or nothing to do with truth, integrity or the long-term survival of the planet. We are witnessing the postmodern version of the full-scale gangsterization of the world.”

Essentially, West blames Obama for not being the progressive liberal he is, and blames neoliberalism for leaching off of his presidency.

He continued to blast the media’s portrayal of Obama, noting how much they overlooked.

“Yet the mainstream media and academia failed to highlight these painful truths linked to Obama,” West states. “Instead, most well-paid pundits on TV and radio celebrated the Obama brand. And most black spokespeople shamelessly defended Obama’s silences and crimes in the name of racial symbolism and their own careerism. How hypocritical to see them now speak truth to white power when most went mute in the face of black power. Their moral authority is weak and their newfound militancy is shallow.”

West, who was an avid Bernie Sanders supporter, believes Obama could have lived up to his billing of being the hope and change candidate. However, now, he left us with the “nightmare” that is Donald Trump.
