Feminists are knitting hundreds of “Pussy Hats” for distribution at the Women’s March on Washington D.C. The “Pussy Hats” — pink knitted hats with cat ears on them — are a project of the PussyHat Project, which was founded over Thanksgiving by two friends, screenwriter Krista Suh and architect Jayna Zweiman.

The PussyHat project’s mission is to “provide the people of the Women’s March on Washington D.C. a means to make a unique visual statement which will help activists be better heard.”

Their goal is to get as many marchers as possible to wear the pink hats.  “If everyone at the march wears a pink hat, the crowd will be a sea of pink, showing that we stand together, united,” they say.

“The more we are seen, the more we are heard. Lets come together to support women’s rights in a creative and impactful way.”

Their hats are called PussyHats as a way to “reclaim” the word, in light of allegations of Donald Trump’s “grab them by the pussy” remark.

“We chose this loaded word for our project because we want to reclaim the term as a means of empowerment. In this day and age, if we have pussies we are assigned the gender of ‘woman.’ Women, whether transgender or cisgender, are mistreated in this society…. we are standing up for our rights,” their mission statement declares.

Suh and Zweiman don’t know how many hats have been made yet, but they told the Huffington Post that they believe anywhere from 30,000 to 100,000 hats have already been knitted. Knitting groups have even formed to help knit, such as the one at Knitty City in the Upper West Side of New York. They are open to PussyHat knitters from 1:30pm-3:30pm every Tuesday.

The Women’s March on Washington was in planning stages far before election results were announced. In an alternative reality in which Clinton won the election, the march would no doubt be celebratory, joyful. However, with the spectre of doom that the Trump presidency has cast over so many young liberal women, the march has decidedly taken a more defiant tone.

Planned Parenthood, The Feminist Majority Foundation, and #VoteProChoice are among the many official sponsors of the march.
