The University of Washington’s Graduate School held a public lecture with Professor Robin DiAngelo on Thursday about white fragility. The audience received a series of descriptions of how Caucasians lack a greater morality, are selfish, and dominate over other people.
DiAngelo’s bullet points included a list of “common white patterns,” including a preference for racial segregation, lack of understanding about what racism is, overly individualistic, arrogance, no humility, unwillingness to listen, apathy towards injustice, the need to save face and look good, and deafness to everything’s connection to race.
It goes without saying that any professor who characterized all black people as being “arrogant” or lacking “humility” would be tarred and feathered out of any college in the country.
The white professor continued nonetheless about how white fragility was a “powerful means of white racial control.”
When whites receive feedback, DiAngelo explained in her lecture, they often react by “trying to explain, arguing, denying, crying, or remaining silent.” Otherwise known as every form of communication short of physical violence.
Throughout the lecture, DiAngelo continually noted that white people carry their history. Does that include when some evil white men abolished legalized slavery in the West, created penicillin that saved countless lives, or promoted a culture that ended virgin sacrifices and stopped female genital mutilation?
Whites can begin to make up for their sin of whiteness by examining their own internalized superiority, challenge their own racial reality, and have more diverse relationships.
Being void of facts, history, and statistics, it’s comforting to know that students can pay nearly $35,000 annually in tuition to hear an old white woman discuss her feelings on people with a similar skin pigmentation. It’s unimaginable why a majority of college students come out of school unemployed or underemployed.
