Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) has been moving to the right on immigration over the last several months, both as a chance to appeal to Donald Trump supporters and as a way to cast himself as the true conservative against pro-amnesty establishment candidates like Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R).
The Democratic National Committee tried to entrap Cruz at a campaign event in Storm Lake, Iowa yesterday by having an illegal immigrant DREAMer named Ofelia Valdez confront the Texas senator.
“As a DACA holder myself, I worried about whoever comes next to the presidency and what’s going to happen to people like us,” Valdez said to Cruz. “I think of myself as part of this community and you know, first day of presidency, you decide to deport, you know, people like myself, you know, it’s just very difficult to process.”
Cruz took an approach that as a sovereign nation, America like all other countries has a right to defend their laws.
“Well listen, I would note, if you’re a DACA recipient, that means that you were brought here illegally, and violating the laws has consequences,” Cruz said. “And one of the problems with our broken immigration systems is that it is creating human tragedies.”
“I can tell you what the law is in every country on earth. If I illegally emigrate to England, or Germany, or France, or China, or Mexico and they catch me, they will deport me,” the senator continued. “That’s what every country on earth does. And there’s no reason that America’s laws should have less respect than the laws of every other country on earth. We should welcome people who come following the laws but there are consequences for breaking the law. And that is part of what makes America the nation that we are.”
The video was uploaded to the DNC YouTube channel where it received a surprisingly large amount of praise for Cruz. The top comments all said he did an outstanding job defending his position even among viewers who were not fans of Texas senator.
Better luck next time DNC…
