The opening ceremony of the Sochi Winter Olympics featured a choreographed tour through Russian history, including a couple of giant props emblematic of the Soviet era.
A hammer and a sickle floated above performers and a street scene inside the Fisht Olympic Stadium Friday, part of a segment that highlighted 20th-century Moscow, per The Sydney Morning Herald. The props hung from separate chains and moved past each other as the theater unfolded at ground level.
The ceremony, which will air on American television tape-delayed at 7:30 EST Friday evening, formally marked the beginning of these winter games, though competition has already been underway for a day — and visitors and media have experienced some rather unwelcoming hiccups for days.
