Would you be willing to buy deeply discounted food, even if it’s passed its suggested expiration date?
Doug Rauch, the former president of the grocery store chain Trader Joe’s, hopes that’s the case. He is now in the process of launching “The Daily Table Project,” a hybrid restaurant-market will sell goods that are just past their suggested expiration date but still healthy to consume at a discount.
Rauch believes that Daily Table will end up competing with fast-food prices once he’s able to convince shoppers that a product just a day after its sell-date hasn’t necessarily gone bad.
“This is about trying to tackle a very large social challenge we have that is going to create a health care tsunami in cost if we don’t do something about it,” Rauch told NPR’s “The Salt.” “I don’t regard Daily Table as the only solution — there are wonderful innovative ideas out there — but I certainly think it is part of and is an innovative approach to trying to find our way to a solution.
According to NowThisNews, one-third of the world’s food ends up in the trash each year – including 40 percent of food in the United States alone.
“The Daily Table Project” will open up in Dorchester, Mass. in early 2014.
