Democratic Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee gave some love to a bug earlier this week, according to a reporter’s account on Twitter. David Klepper, who covers the Rhode Island Statehouse for the Associated Press, caught Chaffee in this act:
Walking up statehouse steps I observed @LincolnChafee save a praying mantis. Used paper to move it to grass. Then got in car and drove away.— David Klepper (@DavidKlepper) August 20, 2013
PETA applauded the governor’s actions. “If it’s true that he took the time to help a praying mantis who had ended up on a pedestrian walkway, Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee reminded all of us that even the smallest lives are important,” a spokesman for the group told Yeas & Nays. “PETA hopes the governor’s kind action will encourage others always to lend a helping hand to any individual who needs it.”
