Twitter-themed hotel offers a social media experience

A beach resort called the Sol Wave House is the first hotel to connect its clients through Twitter. The hotel, on the Spanish Island of Mallorca, opened in the summer of 2012 with a business model fit for the social media savvy. @SolWaveHouse calls itself a “Twitter experience hotel.”

“The hotel takes a new step in meeting the expectations of an increasingly experiential and social customer profile, through new technologies,” General Manager Gonzalo Echevarría said in a press release.

The hotel’s mostly-young adult clientele can register with their Twitter accounts to access a virtual community called #SocialWave, only available from the hotel’s Wi-Fi. Guests can meet and chat with each other, compete in contests and share photos through Twitter.

The term ‘social wave’ comes from the hotel’s flowboarding activity, which is described as a European ‘hybrid of surf and snowboard.’ Keeping with the theme of the hotel, flowboarding is done on artificial wave pools.

There are 184 regular suites in the hotel, but for an extra charge, groups of friends can rent exclusive Twitter Party Suites. Along with the party suite, guests receive additional benefits including drink specials and assistance from ‘Twitter Concierges,’ who take care of  guest requests via Twitter and start conversations in the virtual community through the #SocialWave hashtag.

The Sol Wave House hotel is located right on the beach and has a sun terrace and outdoor swimming pools overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Bars, restaurants, golf courses and shopping are all located around the hotel for those looking for the more traditional vacation experience.
