President Barack Obama made an unfortunate comment today regarding the first openly gay male professional athlete in a major U.S. sport, saying the NBA player could still “bang with Shaq.”
During a special White House press conference, the President was asked to give his opinion of Washington Wizards center Jason Collins, who recently admitted he’s homosexual.
“Given the importance of sports in our society, for an individual who has excelled at the highest levels in one of the major sports to go ahead and say, ‘This is who I am. I’m proud of it. I’m still a great competitor. I’m still 7 foot tall and can bang with Shaq and deliver a hard foul’…I think it’s a great thing,” the President said.
While “bang” is a basketball term, using it to talk about a gay athlete probably wasn’t the smartest word choice.
Now we know why the President needs a teleprompter at every speaking event.
