The 144-year old UC system boasts 10 campuses across the state, a $22.7 billion annual budget, 235,000 students and 189,000 staff members. Until recently, its logo was a glorious old-school shield with a book and the motto “let there be light.”
Apparently that wasn’t appealing to the UC Regents, who commissioned a new design from creative director Vanessa Correa and art director Kirill Mazin. The pair gathered a student team to create what you see above: a swirling yellow-to-green C vanishing into a blue shield.
The old logo won’t disappear completely; it remains on letterheads and graduation certificates. But to the consternation of some students, the new device will appear on all websites, brochures and fundraising letters. Critics point out that it is a solution in search of a problem; no one was complaining the University of California didn’t appear progressive or modern enough.
