Rebecca Black’s new single won’t make your ears bleed

Teen singer Rebecca Black is back with a new single, proving to all the haters that she just might be talented after all.

On Friday, Black released “In Your Words,” her fifth single since the infamous viral video “Friday” that earned her social media mockery, a load of negative press and numerous death threats. And while none of her subsequent music videos have as many YouTube views as her original release, the 15-year-old hasn’t dropped off the radar — yet.

In her new song, Black writes her own lyrics backwards on a window, something that is a talent in and of itself. Her sound has matured in the time since “Friday,” and the tune is catchy. Not a chart-topper by any means, nor especially insightful in lyrical content, but a big step away from the train wreck that originally made her famous.

Viewers of Black’s new video might watch it with the intention of making fun of the young singer, but some of them just might enjoy it, too. Black is still cashing in on her “Friday” fame, but that won’t carry her forever. She’ll have to stand on her own at some point, and songs like “In Your Words” could be the secret to getting there.
