In an astounding development at the Democratic National Convention this evening, a motion by Former Ohio Governor Ted Stickland to insert the word ‘God’ into the party platform together with language recognizing the city of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, broke down into a bizarre shouting match.
“As an ordained United Methodist minister, I am here to attest and affirm that our faith and belief in God is central to the American story and informs the value we have expressed in our party’s platform,” Strickland said. “In addition, President Obama recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and our party’s platform should as well.”
After holding two voice votes, the chair, Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, was unable to determine by a voice vote whether two-thirds of the delegates gave enough vocal consent necessary to pass the motion.
