While a state senator, Obama refused to support a proposed Illinois bill that would have required that babies who survive attempted abortions receive medical attention rather than being left to die.
“Many children, more than you might think, actually survive failed abortions and are born alive,” Ohden says. “I know because I’m one of them – I was aborted and my body discarded like I didn’t exist, but a nurse heard me crying and cared enough to save my life.”
Ohden takes Obama to task for voting, on four different occasions, against granting constitutional protections to babies who survive abortions.
“Is this the kind of leadership we need that would discard the weakest among us?” Ohden asks.
The ad is part of an $150,000 ad campaign being run across Missouri, where Rep. Todd Akin notoriously got into trouble over his remarks about “legitimate rape.” Additional ads are being considered for North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia and Wisconsin.
SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser told Red Alert Politics that the Democrats have a lot of nerve calling conservatives extreme on abortion, given President Obama’s opposition to granting basic constitutional rights to children who survive abortions.
“It’s highly personal, and you cannot argue with her,” Dannenfelser said, regarding Ohden’s comments in the ad. “She’s the authority.”
Dannenfelser noted that the President similarly refused to support a ban on sex-selective abortions.
“There is an irony here of an African-American person looking at a born child in the eyes and saying, ‘You are not a person in the eyes of the law’,” Dannenfelser said. “It’s a dangerous place to be when we get to decide.”
