The vast majority of Americans support Voter ID laws a new Washington Post poll confirms.
In a poll conducted on July 18 The Washington Post found that 74 percent of American think voters should “be required to show official, government-issued photo identification – such as a drivers license — when they cast ballots on Election Day.” Of the Americans who said they plan to vote in 2012 the number stayed consistent, with 74 percent of respondents saying voters should have to show a photo ID to cast a ballot. Among those polled who do not plan to vote 76 percent said they support said laws, leaving no room for those who oppose Voter ID laws to say the laws are the reason non-voters who were questioned said they planned not to vote.
Despite the Left’s fierce attempts to frame Voter ID laws as racist or somehow controversial, the Washington Post poll, which was released today, proves Americans are not buying the Left’s desperate attempts to radicalize a common sense reform that helps protect our country’s elections from being marred by voter fraud.
Liberals have also tried to claim that Voter ID laws are being put into law by Republicans to surpress the youth vote.
Unfortunately for the Left, The Washington Post – which is generally not a friend of conservatives – published the poll’s cross-tabs. The cross-tabs reveal that 73 percent of respondents ages 18-29 said they supported such laws.
This poll should not come as a shock to anyone. Rasmussen released a similar poll in July, in which 73 percent of respondents said Voter ID laws are not discriminatory.
Why does the Left continue to make Voter ID laws one of it’s key focal points this election year in the face of multiple polls showing that Americans are overwhelming in favor of protecting the integrity of our democracy by requiring would be voters to prove they are who they say they are? With the economy in the tank, and the current occupant of the White House losing support from the two voting blocks that led him to a landslide election in 2008 – young voters and minorities – liberals have nowhere to turn but fear and blame.
In the case of Voter ID laws, however, liberals might want to pick a new issue to be outraged over heading into the November election. Americans’ aren’t buying it.
