Reid still not convinced Romney paid his taxes

The stand off between Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney over Reid’s charge that Romney didn’t pay taxes for 10 years continued Thursday to the chagrin of . . . almost everyone.

After Romney told reporters Thursday afternoon that that he “never paid less than 13 percent,” a Reid spokesman told Politico, “We’ll believe it when we see it.”

“Until Mitt Romney releases his tax returns, Americans will continue to wonder what he’s hiding. Romney seems to think he plays by a different set of rules than every other presidential candidate for the last thirty years, all of whom lived up to the standard of transparency set by Mitt Romney’s father and released their tax returns,” Reid staffer Adam Jentleson said, shamelessly invoking Romney’s dead father George Romney.

Reid and Romney have trading barbs over the tax issue since a July 31 Huffington Post article put Reid on the record claiming that an anonymous source who was a major investor in former Romney firm Bain Capital told him Romney did not pay taxes for 10 years.

Romney has said he paid his taxes multiple times since the initial accusation and has told Reid to provide proof of his claims or shut up twice this month. Even 2008 GOP presidential candiate John McCain, who vetted Romney in 2008 to be his running mate, came to Romney’s defense this week, saying Romney, who released 23 years of tax returns to him last presidential cycle, has in fact paid his taxes, which is apparently not good enough for Reid.

Reid is clearly not going to let this one go anytime soon.
