McCain: There is no evidence that Mitt Romney did not pay taxes

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) came to Mitt Romney’s defense Monday, deflecting claims by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) that the presumptive GOP nominee did not any taxes for 10 years.

McCain, the 2008 GOP nominee, told Las Vegas Sun reporter Jon Ralston that his team examined Romney’s tax returns during the vetting process that ultimately led to Sarah Palin being named as his running mate and found no evidence that he had not paid taxes.

“I am absolutely confident that he … did pay taxes,” McCain said. “I am absolutely confident.”

The former presidential candidate then went on to cry foul, suggesting a double standard.

“Why didn’t we ask for John Kerry’s wife’s tax returns,” McCain said. “We never got a single one.Why is it everybody including me only had two years worth of tax returns?

“Is that really the problem that is facing America today?”
