The Supreme Court’s decision upholding the constitutionality of Obamacare was not a complete loss for conservatives because it reaffirmed the limits of federal power, Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi told an audience Saturday morning at the Defending the American Dream Summit in Washington.
Bondi was one of 26 state attorneys general who led the fight against the Obama administration to overturn Obamacare.
“Despite what you hear from the federal government, there are real enforceable limits to the power of the federal government over the lives of the American people,” Bondi said.
This was reinforced in her opinion by the Supreme Court’s upholding of the attorneys generals’ argument that the Constitution’s commerce clause does not give the federal government power to force Americans to engage in commerce.
“What we heard all along was that if they could do this to us, they could do anything,” Bondi said. “Sadly, however, it wasn’t obvious to the liberal law professors of the world who refused to take our case seriously and doubted we would ever make it out of district court.
“In their constitutional view, Congress can pass whatever economic regulations it wants.”
She also praised the court’s finding limiting the expansion of Medicaid, calling it “a big win” for fiscal responsibility and state’s rights.
