POTUS said of the Olympian, “Congrats to Michael Phelps for breaking the all-time Olympic medal record. You’ve made your country proud. –bo.”
Phelps responded back via Twitter with,“Thank you Mr. President!! It’s an honor representing the #USA!! The best country in the world!!”

Is President Obama trying to win over Olympians? The President’s congratulatory tweet & phone call come just two days after GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney’s Super PAC, Restore our Future, released a video that shows Olympians Kristi Yamaguchi, Jimmy Shea and Derek Parra praising Romney for his work during the 2002 Winter Olympics.
Phelps set the Olympic medal record when he won his 19th medal as the anchor of the 4×200-meter freestyle relay. He also received shout-outs on Twitter from John Wall of the Washington Wizards, speed skating champion Shaun White, Donte Stallworth of the New England Patriots, and singer Samantha Ronson.
