Host Ed Schultz tried to portray Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) as someone who is on a witch hunt, who even went out of his way to use the tired accusation of racism on the part of Republicans. Schultz tried to get Cummings to say it was about race.
Cummings did not take the bait, but he did not say anything to contrary, suggesting Schultz’s claims are true.
“I’m not going to say that. I leave that to other people to make the determination,” said Cummings.
The race claim comes just days after Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) claimed that Republicans are hammering Holder because of his opposition to Voter ID laws.
Cummings also maintained that Holder cannot be subpoenaed to give up documents that he believes are unlawful to release. He claimed that Republicans are playing election-year politics and trying to hurt President Barack Obama’s chances for re-election.
“Their aim is to embarrass the president, embarrass this attorney general, and I think they figure that if they can do that, they’ll be able to help Romney win the presidency. I think Americans will see through this and see how political it is.”
With all of this talk about Republican obstructionism, no one pointed out that Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry was killed by the very same firearms provided by the U.S. Government in the “gun walking” scandal, which was allowed by Holder.
Holder, the president and other Democrats are trying to distract the public from the real issue at hand. The federal government lost track of many of the firearms sent across the U.S.-Mexico border—firearms that could still be used against U.S. citizen or law enforcement—in the reckless operation.
