Asked about Rangel’s re-election, the White House says it will ‘get back to you on that’

After Charlie Rangel said he “would welcome” reporters asking President Obama whether he supports the longtime congressman for re-election, the question was asked today at a White House press briefing.

It seemed like an easy one for press secretary Jay Carney, who had already suffered a half-hour interrogation on the president’s position on same-sex marriage. But the change in topic flustered him, and he let out a heavy breath.

“I have to take that question, I haven’t—I mean, well I—yes, sure,” he said to some awkward chuckles from the press corps. “I haven’t been asked that before.”

“Yeah sure, you’ll take the question? Or yeah, sure he supports him?” asked the reporter.

“I’ll have to—I’ll have to, get back to you on that,” Carney said.
