Santorum has Romney slinging mud – literally

Rick Santorum’s latest ad has Mitt Romney (well, a very good look-a-like of Mitt Romney) literally throwing mud at the former US Senator.

It’s no secret Romney has been going more and more negative in recent weeks, especially with his numbers slipping in the must-win state of Michigan.

Santorum has apparently had enough of the mudslinging and began airing a new ad in Michigan, hoping to capitalize on Romney’s falling favor.

The ad, entitled “Rombo”,  is a tongue-in-cheek nod to the Rambo films popular in the 1980s, starring Sylvester Stallone. In it, “Rombo” (the pretty convincing  Romney look-a-like) runs around an empty warehouse, shooting a mud gun at a cardboard cutout of Santorum. The thirty-second ad ends with “Rombo” getting mud all over himself, the narrator stating, “And in the end Mitt Romney’s ugly attacks are going to backfire.”

It sounds ridiculous. And it is. But it’s also effective.

Santorum has some major momentum going. After sweeping the Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri contests (even though they were non-binding), his national numbers are climbing,

If the “Sant-mentum” keeps growing, Mitt Romney could be in big trouble, with a lot of mud on his face.
